Fat Is Not A Fairy Tale: My Favorite Poem
What captivates my heart from this poem is truly the simplicity of it. Through just her thoughts, Yolen is able to clearly communicate what she wished to. Her use of repetition of "I am thinking" is repeated just the right amount of times to persuade the reader into imagining the fairy tales being depicted and also convey the sense of urgency. Without this repetition, the intent of the poem wouldn't be able to be seen clearly and the meaning along with the format of her well-flown thoughts would have been lost. Despite her technical writing skills, she also has a skill at taking notice of what society needs to work on- like the standards that are created for youth. I very well agree with Yolen that everyone should be considered beautiful no matter what their weight. Society needs to be more aware of this growing issue of the pressure media puts on girls- they are the ones who make girls lose their self value in trade for that of what a typical "princess" should look like. If there is anyone to blame for the lack of self esteem 'overweight' or 'chubby' girls have, it is most definitely the media. Yolen pics up on this concerning issue in both a age and reader friendly way. I believe that if everyone was as thoughtful and considerate as Yolen, then the world would truly be more than what a utopia is considered (with all the kindheartedness). It is because of this poem that I am assured that there is such humanity left in the world, that still acquires a a heartfelt approach to everyone, despite their appearance So thank you Yolen, for aspiring such beauty in not our physical appearances but the appearance of our faith.
